Gym Pet Peeves

There are a lot of things I love about the gym: the feeling I get lifting heavy, how awesome it makes me look, the hilarious facial expressions people make as they try to heave out that final rep (myself included). The list can go on and on. Too bad there are also a ton of things I hate dislike greatly. If you want to make me (and your fellow gym-goers happy) don’t engage in any of these terribly annoying pet-peeves!

Doing any exercise directly in front of the dumbbell rack. I’m not sure why, but this really, really bothers me. Nothing is more annoying than needing to get a dumbbell and someone is standing right in front of the rack doing their set, making it impossible for you to get what you need. All I ask is that you step back about 10 feet. I promise you’ll still be able to see yourself in the mirror so you can check yourself out the whole time.

Not re-racking your weights. Not only is it plain old rude to leave weights on a machine when you’re done, but it confuses the heck out of people. I can’t even count the number of times someone asked me if a machine was being used because there was still weight on it. Most of the time, it’s been empty for a while. If you put the weight on there, you can take it off!

Not wiping off machines when you’re extremely sweaty. No one wants to sit in your sweaty puddle. Not to mention this is just super unsanitary (hello staph infection)! It takes two seconds to grab a wet wipe and mop up after yourself. Please do so!

Texting while someone is waiting to use a machine. I love my phone as much as the next person, but they shouldn’t be allowed on gym floors unless you are 1) using it solely for music or 2) you’re timing yourself in between sets with the stopwatch! I’ve been stuck waiting too many times because someone had to text their girlfriend a three page love letter or read their entire Facebook feed before their next set. Put the phone down and focus! I promise no one will freak out if you’re out of reach for 1-2 hours.

Not letting someone work in with you. Don’t you remember when your parents taught you it was nice to share? Well, that still applies even as adults! Sometimes people are in a rush or the machine you’re using fits into their superset or circuit. Let them work in while you’re taking your rest. You might even make a new friend that way!
